How WATA works: Produce chlorine locally

Some 783 million people have no access to improved drinking water sources. According to the WHO, « the lack of access to safe drinking water, combined with inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene, is an important contributing factor to the 1.8 million annual deaths from diarrheal diseases. »

The injection of active chlorine into drinking water eliminates the pathogenic microorganisms and guards against possible recontamination. Unfortunately, supply chains of chlorine do not always reach communities in developing countries, especially communities in rural areas. When we’re looking at the quality rather than the quantity of water, producing chlorine locally is therefore a simple, cost-effective and sustainable means of improving access to drinking water.

A technology: the WATA

The WATA technology allows the local production of sodium hypochlorite* for water treatment and disinfection purposes. It targets communities that lack access to a chlorine supply chain or to a supply system of potable water.

To respond better to the needs in the fields, our Research and Development Department improves the WATA technique together with our partners in Switzerland and overseas.

An approach: WATASOL

The WATA device is packaged in the overall and sustainable WATASOL approach.

WATASOL is combining health education, technical training, and creation of an economic model based on sodium hypochlorite and chlorinated water production and sales. Our objective is to make safe water treatment an accessible and profitable activity for communities of developing countries.
