Energy: lighting for the most destitute

Antenna is engaged in the struggle against ‘energetic poverty’ through the development of an efficient and affordable solution to replace the kerosene lamps used in poor homes without electricity.

A clear improvement of their quality of life

In developing countries, many remote areas and shantytowns are not connected to a reliable electrical power supply – or simply not connected at all. As artificial light is essential for school children and for domestic chores, kerosene lamps are in general use. These are, however, particularly inefficient and their toxic fumes threaten families’ respiratory health. Moreover, contrary to the false economic impression given, kerosene is actually an expensive item for households (40-80 USD per year).

Antenna is committed to making quality lighting available to all. Antenna is developing a modern lighting system, which is both efficient and affordable, with the aim of improving the quality of life and the health of the poorest homes. Replacing kerosene by a modern lighting system offers the following benefits:

  • It lengthens the day and prolongs the time available for study, work and social activities.
  • It reduces pollution in the home, thereby improving respiratory health.
  • Removing this dangerously inflammable fuel from homes reduces mortal fire hazards.
